Continuous professional development and future prospects

Continuous Professional Development (CPD) is necessary to keep up with the changes that occur in the medical world. Changes continually occur in the demography of diseases and the treatment available. New research transforms the way things are perceived. Therefore continuous engagement in professional development enables a doctor to maintain good medical practice. This concept has gained recognition and CPD is now a legal requirement in a number of countries with medical registration being subject to revalidation (assessment of skills to ensure fitness to practice). CPD has gained interest in Sri Lanka as well with the CPD committee formed by the SLMC and linked to the health ministry overseeing such activities.
