Internship and it's objectives

Internship is the first year of required residency medical graduates have to under on completion of the MBBS degree in order to obtain full registration as medical practitioners. During this period the intern has to engage in two six monthly appointments pertaining to two different clinical specialties. 

The accepted combinations of specialties have been listed below -

  • Surgery and Medicine
  • Surgery and Paediatrics
  • Gynecology and Obstetrics and Medicine
  • Gynecology & Obstetrics and Paediatrics
  • Gynecology & Obstetrics and Paediatric Surgery (This combination is accommodated only under special circumstances at Lady Ridgeway Hospital)


It is necessary to understand the objectives of internship before commencement – they include but are not limited to

  • the amalgamation of theoretical knowledge and practical implementation
  • the development of sound clinical, professional, technical and personal skills
  • the cultivation of responsibility for patient care including the offering of support for patients and families
  • the gaining of professional judgement and action within ethical and legal bounds
  • the cultivation of the ability to engage in teamwork in an interdisciplinary environment
  • the development methods of coping with professional and personal pressures that are experienced as member of the medical profession
  • increased insight into personal preferences and the identification of avenues for further  professional development
