Importance of building a portfolio

A portfolio acts as an instrument for self-directed learning. The reflective thinking required for a portfolio allows the individual to engage in self-assessment that in turn promotes self- awareness.

Building a portfolio has become a widely accepted in post-graduate medical education as means of assessing if an individual’s skills and monitoring continuing professional development as it can be used to assess experiences in a real-life settings that may result in diverse outcomes.  

Further more it is used as a means of appraisal for revalidation by regulatory authorities.

As such a sound understanding of portfolio based assessment and acquiring the skills required to build and maintain one should not be neglected.
